Maria's face got even redder at Ea's remark. "Ea! We're in public!", Maria chided, only half serious. She would have tried to imagine just what Ea's 'seductive uses' could be, but now wasn't the time to be thinking about that kind of thing.
"I don't know. I didn't get a chance to find it on the directory map!", Maria replied, "I saw the name of the store, but I didn't get the chance to see what was near it, or where we were!", she clarified, beginning to panic.
"Wh-what? A guy? What... What did he look like?", Maria asked, more than a little scared. She hoped it wasn't Marcus. Marcus? That was impossible! He was safely across the Atlantic Ocean! On the other side of the continental U.S.! He couldn't be here! Still, he could easily have put on an act... Maria suddenly realised she was practically crushing Ea's hand. "Sorry..", she murmured, letting go.

Ea pulled away immediately. "Sorry. Does me doing that in public embarrass you?" There was no smile on her lips now. This was a serious question. Some people didn't like to come out to the world. Ever. Some people kept their love in a small box and only showed it to their friends, preferring closed doors whenever they showed what they really felt. Ea respected that, even when it had never really been her. Hell, she had been out of the closet before she even knew there was one in the room.
"We're fine! We're fine." They were still in the mall, at least. Lots of people around, which was a good sign. Though most of of the people around them just let their eyes skip over them, not really seeing them at all. A bad sign. "I didn't see him. He looked about twenty-five? Burly guy. Clean-cut. Looked like a prep. Lots of tan." When Maria let go, Ea just snatched her hand back again. "Don't let go. Please?"

"Well, yeah... Kinda... I mean... well... I was only half-serious...", Maria said, "Sorry...", she said when she saw Ea's smile fade, "Well, I don't mind you showing affection... It's just...", she fell silent.
"Okay, that's good!", Maria said, calming down a little. Ea's description made her feel even better. It couldn't have been Marcus! Marcus was only 19! She smiled, feeling reassured. "Okay, I won't.", Maria quietly said. There was something in Ea's tone she didn't like...

"Just what?" Ea didn't want to sound angry. Instead, her voice came out as a flatline. Not a good sign, but it was what she could manage. "It's just what? Look," she sighed, knowing this was an important conversation that had to happen at some point. "I realize that some people are touchy about public kissing, and touching and all. So, if you want to limit it to holding hands unless we're alone, tell me now so that I don't make the same mistake a second time."
"That's good?" Ea laughed, though it was the nerves speaking. "Why is that good?" She looked around, and saw a store with deportes in the name. "Over here. And thank you."

"Well, you can kiss me, that's fine! It's just... well... anything more... private will have to wait.", Maria clarified, blushing, "That's all. Sorry...", she continued.
"Well, it's not good that we're being followed, but it is good that I know who it can't possibly be!", Maria explained. She didn't want to voice those thoughts until later. "Hey! They're havng a sale, it looks like!", Maria exclaimed, looking at a sign, "Um... maybe we should find a sales lady to translate this...", she murmured, realising that the sign was in Spanish.

Ea nodded. "Okay. Sorry. I just... wanted to get that out of the way. Because it's a good thing to be on the same page about." Her blush made Ea feel bad immediately. "I didn't mean to sound pissed or anything. I've just messed up on that before."
Ea gave a reassuring squeeze of Maria's hand. "Yes. And I'm sure we'll be fine." Ea squinted at the sign, pitching her voice into a high spanish accent. "Zapato a la venta. I think that's shoes on sale, though I could be wrong. Should we go in?" Her spanish was a little bit rusty. She knew she should have touched up on it before she came here.

"Oh, no! It's okay!", Maria said, "I should have been a little clearer from the start...".
"Wow! You know spanish? That's so amazing!", Maria exclaimed, "We should. Especially if you feel you need lighter shoes for training.", she continued. Maria glanced around. There was no sign of their mysterious observer. It looked as if they'd lost him, but Maria still had the feeling they were being watched. "Let's go see what they have!", Maria exclaimed, trying to focus on the task at hand. A pair of black combat boots caught her eye. Maria started to walk over to them, but stopped. <Later, if there's time and money...>, she promised herself.

Ea blushed at the compliment. "I know a little bit. Not that much." She stepped into the store, looking for the shoes, which seemed to be lined up against the back wall. "I'm not too sure what I need, exactly. Could you help me?" She saw Maria's eyes catch on a pair of black boots, and smiled. Excellent. They were very sexy, too. Which was always a plus, when buying a present for your girlfriend. Heh. Girlfriend. The word when associated with Maria mad Ea feel like she could fly.
As for the guy that had been eyeing them.. He seemed to have backed off for now. Which was a relief that she wasn't afraid to let show in the relaxing of her shoulders, and a wider smile.

"... I'm not sure... I can't really recommend anything, seeing as I don't know what it is you're looking for...", Maria said, "I only know what type of shoes I like. But if you want some ideas, I'm sure we could figure out what you need if you tell me what you want!", she added, not wanting to dissapoint Ea. Maria saw Ea relax. <That's good.>, she thought, feeling a little better.

"Comfortable is good." Ea nodded, eyes scanning the racks. "What would you recommend? I haven't done much in the way of training before." It made her feel almost ridiculous. She could tell you what type of boot an English general would have worn in the first World War, but she couldn't tell you one thing to look for in a running shoe. "Colors and style don't matter to me much, really. If it's not history, it's all the same..." One of her mottos for buying clothes.
