Goals/Aspirations:
Maria wants to be a modern-day ninja. She also seeks to win her father’s love, and is willing do most anything to earn it.
Appearance:
Maria is a cutie with waist-length hair, which she keeps in a ponytail. Her bangs normally cover her eyes, partly to hide their unusual color and partly as a style thing. This often tends to give her face something of a heart-shape. She often wears black, loose-fit jeans, a long-sleeve shirt, and a sweater or sweatshirt (More often than not, adorned with cats), even in mid-summer! She rarely is seen in a dress, and refuses to wear skirts. She often wears a green kunoichi headband as a part of her style. She wears a sage and lavender wristwatch given to her by her best friend. Maria is also often seen carrying around her favorite stuffed animal, a cat named Cutie. She has a particular (some would say peculiar) love of combat boots. She is almost never seen in any other type of footwear. Her favorite pair is a black, well worn pair she affectionately refers to as ‘Old Tiredsides’. She occasionally has been known to wear hair clips.
Personality:
Maria tends to be shy around girls she doesn’t know. She avoids boys as much as possible, often insulting (unintentionally) them in the process. Maria tends to be the weird comedian of the group when she’s among friends, despite the fact that she’s very mature and intelligent. Maria has a strong sense of justice and forms deep, if fragile, bonds with her friends. The bonds are so deep that even the slightest hurt inflicted on a friend is enough to make her cry. Maria doesn’t like people who are violent for the sake of being violent, but she’s prepared to crack a few skulls to protect her pals, and has the skills to do so. Maria has an insatiable addiction to chocolate, an addiction which sends her into a hyperactive frenzy at the mere mention of the word. She has even been known on occasion to eschew bringing school supplies in favor of packing extra chocolate in her lunch.

&&--A glimpse of the past
Father: Robert Anthony Sumner Age: 45
Mother: Mia Cornelia Sumner (Marie) Age: 40
Siblings:
Marcia Merriam Sumner Age: 20
Marcus Daryl Sumner Age: 19
Cornelia Marie Sumner Age: 15
Other important relatives: N/A
Pets: 1
Age: 2 years
Name: Neko-san
Species: Yep! He’s a cat!
History:
Maria has always lived in the shadow of her older sister, Marcia. Her father constantly compares Maria to her, and Maria has resented Marcia for being ‘perfect’ and their father’s favorite for as far back as her memory goes. Maria and Cornelia, having been in the same boat (with regards to Marcia) their entire lives, are very close. So close, in fact, that when Maria realized she was a lesbian, Cornelia was the first person she told. Maria and her brother Marcus have a complicated relationship. Marcus developed an Oedipus complex at 5 years of age. His mother never fully realized that Marcus was in love with her until he was 7, when she gently rejected his feelings for her. Marcus, having taken this rejection very hard, began to develop sexual feelings for Maria to compensate for the pain. At first, Maria enjoyed being ‘Markie’s favorite’, but that ended when he raped her (she was 13 at the time.). This led Maria to fear males in general, Marcus in particular. She still has not told anyone other than Cornelia. Marcus, however, still lusts after Maria.
Her father first began to suspect Maria’s homosexuality when Maria began avoiding boys and spending unusual amounts of time with Sarah, her best friend. He called various parents of boys she used to hang out with, only to discover Maria had begun cutting her ties with them without giving a reason. After sending Maria to 7 different psychologists (who often ended up refusing to see her because of her refusal to open up to them.), Robert concluded (half-correctly) that Maria had to be hiding something. He guessed (correctly) that she was a lesbian. He heard about La Campana through a coworker who had sent her son there for ‘correction’. In a family meeting, Robert gave Maria an ultimatum: She would attend La Campana and go straight. If she didn’t, she would be disowned. Maria chose to give La Campana a try, secretly vowing to herself that she would do whatever it took to win the love of her father. Maria has known she’s a lesbian since she was 6.
Roleplaying Sample: (Note: This is a bit unusual for me. Normally, I wouldn’t write this much, largely because I feel it doesn’t let the action proceed naturally. I’ll follow the rules, though, and eventually I’ll settle into a groove. Also, I use <> in place of “” to indicate that the character is thinking rather than speaking out loud. You may get a chance to see why in the RP!)
“Hey, Maria! Let’s go see a movie!”, Cornelia shouted, throwing in an inviting wave. Cornelia was worried about her big sis. Maria had been far too broody lately.
“Okay. What do you have in mind?”, Maria responded, glad for the distraction. She had been unable to get the incident off of her mind the past few days. Maria knew Cornelia had many questions she was dying to ask, and was grateful for Cornelia’s tactful use of restraint. “Let’s see a long one, please. Papa’s been arguing with Momma again. Something about reform schools and odd cabana…”, she continued.
“Agreed!”, Cornelia replied, all too well aware of how loud arguments between their parents could get. <Thank goodness they’re not violent people!>, she thought to herself.
