[FFF SO WIP]
Maren is, for all intents and purposes, a very laid-back, free-spirited guy.
As he's always said, "Life is suffering. You can either go with it and let yourself be miserable, or pretend like crazy that everything is awesome, and that you're capable of making your life better. It doesn't work or anything, but as long as you keep truckin' on and hoping, you can be happy in the process. ...Drugs don't hurt, either."
Which is a rather simple way of expressing that althought the events in Maren's life ought to have lead to a very down-trodden, hopeless person, he's managed to come around and make a pleasant existance for himself. People call him childish and immature, with an incredble ability to make any situation awkward with his sexual innuendo and mischevious demeanor. He'd respond that it makes him happy.
All his life, people have told him that he's smart. His ability to recall detail and information is astounding--a photographic memory, an expert would tell you. He would simply respond that he's never once in his life felt intelligent. Facts are just simple chips of information. He has no specific talents otherwise, and certainly can't hold his own in a philosophical debate. Truth be told, he considers himself a complete dunce. Gullible to the nth degree and completely incapable of
His strong points, however, do lie in things that require. Math, physics--anything that requires study and hard, cold numbers, he can do perfectly. He can beat just about anyone in a game of pool, and tell you the exact statistics of when you might die. He could be a perfect mathmetician or scientiest, but still considers it useless. If he could learn an instrument, or properly paint--now those would be skills worth having!
Though there is the part of him that recognizes the bad things in his life, and occasionally feels depressed over them, most of Maren's life is spent living in the moment, and forgetting about the past (Unless he's sharing a story--he loves that!). As far as he figures, life is all about what you make of it. If shit happens and you let yourself feel shitty about it, then your life is complete shit. If shit happens to you and you say 'fuck it, I'm still having fun!', then your life is only half-shit. It's simple math, really.
He loves being the comic foil
Yet there's a part of Maren that will always, always be afraid of other people. He has crippling commitment issues, and generally doesn't keep friends for longer than a year. It's a fear of pain and rejection--a fear that they will leave him for something he will inevitably do. And so, rather than wait for that day, he'll stop returning calls and avoid them at all costs. He does this to anyone who starts to become too attached to him or that he becomes too attached to, as well. It's for the better, he feels. If you keep things simple, you keep them safe. And as far as he's considered, 'friends with benefits' is like having a relationship without the horridly terrifying aspects. [/font]
