History:
Don't sit anxiously in your seat, eyes wide and 3-D goggles poised for an Avatar-esque story of excitement--as most standards go, Attikus has lead a pleasant, mostly happy existance.
Born the youngest of two male siblings, Attikus' life began in the small city of Sparks. He lived in a nice little house in what can only be described as "suburbia so neighborly and charming, there must be some horrible dark secrets just beneath the surface. His parents, a therapist and geologist, weren't the richest of people; what they lacked in monetary value, however, they more than made up for in love for their children.
The family moved to Tennessee when a job opened up for Attikus' father. Whenever telling the story of his time in Memphis, Attikus will always precede the story with a stark warning: "Never raise your kids in Memphis. Serious. Don't fucking do it!". This statement stems from a plethora of childhood stories from the town--none of them pleasant.
It's important to not that Attikus didn't have a bad childhood--with loving parents, an older brother to constantly look up to, and the Power Rangers to keep him company, he had things good by many standards. It is merely that the town was a terrible place for him. Horrible baby-sitters, a little girl who chased him around the playground all day and every day, too shy to make friends, and crazy neighbors who hated them for not being religious--yeah, not quite the ideal situation.
There was, however, one friend he made that he occasionally thinks about even today. He cannot recall a name or a face--merely a nickname that the other students gave him, and a story to go along with it. The boy was called mosquito, a cruel nickname given by one of his classmates upon watching him suck at a cut. He was the token 'loser' of the school--too shy to stand up for himself, and easy to pick on. One day in art class, as all of the students were bustling out, another student nudged against Attikus' full arms, sending his box of coloring pencils to the floor. Attikus stooped to the ground to pick them up, expecting his classmates to help him. None came. They all walked past and over him, many stepping on and breaking his pencils. In tears and still trying to pick up the pencils with shaking hands, he was startled to see another hand close to his begin to help him pick up the crayons. It was Mosquito, who offered a smile and helped with the whole ordeal. They became fast friends after that, both taking solace in their shyness, and even making their own secret hide-out where the rest of the students wouldn't be able to find them--not that they looked, of course. In all of the years he spent in that town, that memory is the only good one.
The day came that his father quit his job, and the small family decided to move to California--where all of his mother's family lived. His father had managed to score himself a high-ranking job within a sister company to the one he had been working--this one allowing him to work from wherever he wished.
California is where Attikus feels his true childhood began; that is, it's where he finally began to feel happy and accepted. Despite being excitable, and having a knack for getting into trouble, Attikus was a star student. Anything he put his mind to, he excelled in. When he was in the fourth grade, he tested among the other students and was placed into the highest math and reading classes. And oh, how he rubbed it in his older brother's face! Stupid Ryan was a year older than him, but in lower classes that Attikus! Of course, this was not in Attikus' best interest--Ryan was a fair deal bigger and stronger than he was, and that's all he needed to win any fight the two had.
School life was grand. He befriended a number of guys, got in trouble for fighting on a frequent basis, and punched out a girl scout for telling him that he was going to hell for being Jewish. He was an eccentric boy, and liked to think himself comic relief to the people around him. As they all talked about girls and sports, Attikus would suggest they all watch Spongebob.
Attikus had never been the most confident or trusting of sorts, but the true blow to both came the end of his 8th grade year. Pre-teens he knew were a catty sort, but he didn't realize the extent of this until the day after 8th grade graduation. That is, the day his 'friends' decided to all unanimously come up to him and announce that they all hated him, called him "AttiCRUST", and left him. He nearly wanted to cry--but a part of him felt almost alleviated. He had steadily come to realize that he didn't fit in with them--that their world and interests were far different than his. They were obsessed with a world of material, that held basis in what the media told them to do. Attikus couldn't fit into such a system.
